Introduction
In production agriculture, farmers and ranchers are challenged to balance sustainability and productivity in agricultural production systems. In order to raise crops or livestock, producers rely on limited natural resource inputs like water, land, and vegetation. They must also consider both positive and negative impacts that production agriculture can have the environment (such as from greenhouse gas emissions or fertilizer application). Producers aim to minimize the amount of inputs needed and negative environmental impacts while maximizing productivity (how much they can grow or raise). This is no easy task. Along the way, agricultural producers are faced with many tough decisions but, luckily, many of them also have access to a wealth of data that can be used to make better decisions.
